Manchester United are reportedly being associated with a surprise swap agreement involving Paul Pogba and Real Madrid’s Gareth Bale this summer. The France international has struggled to maintain his form over the course of the season, and this has presented doubts over his long-term future at Old Trafford.
According to Don Balon, United boss Jose Mourinho is still said to be interested in signing Gareth Bale, and the Portuguese could supposedly part ways with Pogba to push through a summer agreement.
Mourinho’s love for the Welshman has remained a public affair since the European Super Cup in August, and Don Balon, who are known for their outlandish claims, are surely trying to make the most of the story.
Obviously, United have had a problem on the right wing with the likes of Juan Mata, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial being rotated, but a move for Bale may seem out of proportion at the moment.
The Mancunian giants are currently in a strong position in the attacking front, where they have had Rashford and Martial warming the bench, and bringing a player of Bale’s caliber does not make sense with his recent injury record.
Bale has been susceptible to multiple injury concerns over the past 21 months which have reduced his gametime, and the United faithful would surely not be impressed with another recruit, who may hamper the development of their younger graduates including Rashford.
Meanwhile, Pogba has come for criticism for his inconsistent showing this season, but the Frenchman holds more importance than ever for United next term, owing to Michael Carrick’s retirement and Marouane Fellaini’s probable exit on a free transfer.
The 25-year-old scored a stupendous brace during the astonishing 3-2 comeback win over Manchester City earlier this month, and the midfielder needs to find the balance between attack and defence in order to truly transform into the club’s go-to man.
