Premier League side Arsenal are reportedly seeking to revive their long-term interest in RB Leipzig midfielder Emil Forsberg. The Sweden international has been a huge figure in the Leipzig ranks since their time in the second tier but he is likely to pursue a new challenge during this summer’s transfer window.
According to Calciomercato, the Gunners are planning to retain their pursuit of the Swedish footballer after discussing about the same with head coach Unai Emery. The new Gunners boss had considered a move for the Swede during his managerial reign at Paris Saint-Germain and he has supposedly given the green light to the club to pursue the £35m-rated playmaker.
Nevertheless, they can expect competition from European rivals Juventus, who have been equally monitoring the attacker’s proceedings over the past 12 months. Forsberg was simply stunning in Leipzig’s debut Bundesliga campaign between 2016 and 2017 where he contributed an impressive tally of eight goals and 22 assists.
However, he could not replicate a similar form during the 2017/18 season where injuries and a loss of form limited him to just two goals and two assists in 21 league appearances for the club.
Despite this, he is highly valued by his admirers owing to his excellent passing and forcefulness on the counter attack and he has been able to play in different positions on the attack side from his regular role behind the main striker.
Arsenal’s issues mostly lied in the holding midfield and central defensive departments during the 2017/18 season and the speculation regarding Forsberg surely seems as a surprise.
Still, Emery could do with another option to compete with Mesut Ozil for the number 10 position where the German has often failed to show up against the big teams. Ozil contributed just one goal and one assist against last season’s top five.
