Spain international Ander Herrera is reportedly evaluating his future at Manchester after finding Premier League opportunities hard to come by this season.
The Spain international has managed just eight starts in the top-flight with the likes of Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba favoured ahead of him on most occasions.
According to El Gol Digital, the 28-year-old is prepared to part ways with the Red Devils during the summer, if Jose Mourinho enters into the transfer market for a new midfielder.
Should this be the case, Herrera is prepared to push for an emotional comeback with Athletic Bilbao with his representatives having already made contact with the Basque outfit.
Meanwhile, Atletico Madrid have also been touted as possible destination for the midfielder enforcer with the Spanish club capable of offering the luxury of Champions League football.
Herrera had his contract prolonged until 2019 via an extension clause on his deal, but there are suggestions that the United may have taken the option with a view to selling him at a reasonable price.
The Spaniard has been an influential player for United over the past two seasons under Louis van Gaal and Mourinho respectively, and during that period, he has helped the side to triumphs in the FA Cup, League Cup and the Europa League.
Despite this, he has not commanded a regular role during the current campaign with his form as well as fitness hampering his chances of enjoying a similar run of form with the first-team.
Herrera is currently sidelined with a hamstring problem sustained during a Champions League tie against Sevilla last month, and this could potentially see him miss most of the remainder of the season with Mourinho failing to offer a probable return date.
Regardless of this, United are in a strong position at the heart of the midfield with Scott McTominay having made a tremendous rise to the first-team. The Scot has been more of a regular starter since the turn of the year, and his progression could spell an end to Herrera’s chances of reviving his Old Trafford career.
