Manchester United did spend a huge amount to sign Lukaku in the summer transfer window but at the moment, the Belgian international is out of form.
On the other hand, last year’s signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan has been poor as well and therefore, Manchester United have suffered in recent times.
In such a scenario, the Red Devils must improve their attack in the upcoming winter transfer window and in my opinion, they have to sign Dries Mertens from Napoli.
The Old Trafford club have been closely following the 30-year-old Belgian international for quite some time and he only has a release clause (TuttoSport h/t CalcioMercato) of 28 million euros in his contract ($33million).
The Belgian star is a versatile talent, who can effectively play anywhere in the attacking third and this season, he has been in fantastic form for the Serie A side, who are currently on top of the league table.
In 18 games (all competitions), Dries has directly contributed in no fewer than 19 goals (12 goals and 7 assists). United need such firepower to challenge Manchester City for the title in the second half of the campaign.
In your opinion, should United activate the release clause in Mertens’ contract to secure his signature?
