Liverpool have been heavily linked with Naby Keita as per the latest reports going on in the media. In my opinion, the Reds must secure the signing of a top quality central defender first and then think about reinforcing any other department.
As far as Liverpool’s midfield is concerned, they have creative stars like Adam Lallana and Georginio Wijnaldum and both of them impressed for the Merseysiders last season.
On the other hand, they also have box to box midfielders like Emre Can and captain Jordan Henderson. So, Klopp has got quality and depth in his midfield and signing Keita should not be more important than luring a top defender and Liverpool have to do that first.
The Reds have been shaky at the back ever since Rafael Benitez left the club back in 2010. Since then, Liverpool have signed central defenders like Toure, Sakho, Lovren, Matip and Klavan but the club has still leaked goals on regular basis.
Joel was solid last season but the likes of Klavan and Lovren were inconsistent. Klopp needs a strong CB to partner the Cameroonian next season and he must splash the cash to sign long term target Virgil van Dijk from Southampton.
The Dutch international is valued at (Express) 70 million pounds ($79million) but he is one of the best defenders in the Premier League, who has the ability to lead the back line and solve Liverpool’s concerns. Moreover, not so long ago, Mail claimed that he is keen on joining the Anfield club as well.
Therefore, even if Liverpool have to pay a record breaking sum, they must splash the cash and secure the signature of Van Dijk.
