Arteta to be Handed Captain’s Armband On Permanent Basis?

Arteta to be Handed Arsenal Captain’s Armband On Permanent Basis?Over the years, Arsenal have sold their captains to top clubs. However, the likes of Vieira, Henry, Fabregas and Van Persie were in top form for the Gunners unlike the current one.
This time, Arsenal’s captain Thomas Vermaelen finds himself in a complex scenario at the Emirates.
The Belgian international was benched because of his poor performances last season and then had injury concerns. Now that he is fit, he still warms the bench because Mertesacker and Koscielny has formed a brilliant partnership for Gunners.
Inevitably, captain is frustrated and may as well depart in January if things do not change. Vermaelen claimed:

“I’ll have to think about that when it’s necessary. January is still a few months ahead. Of course, never playing will not be the ideal situation for me to go to the World Cup, that’s for sure.”

Belgium have a quality squad and not playing regular club football may hurt his first team chances for the national side at the World Cup.
In such a scenario, if Vermaelen opts to leave, it is highly likely that Mikel Arteta will become the new owner of Arsenal captain’s armband.
The Spaniard is currently captaining the side effectively as Vermaelen watches from the bench but he may have the armband on permanent basis soon if Wenger does not have any other ideas.
