John Obi Mikel received a lot of criticism last season for being too inconsistent and there were chances that he will leave Chelsea this summer.
Anyways that did not happen and the criticism still continues.
Perhaps it is justified as Blues had brilliant CDMs like Makelele and Essien (when he was young) but now there is no world class holding midfielder.
Perhaps it is not justified as some fans believe that Chelsea’s real problem is not in defense but in attack.
Everytime Mikel is blamed for one reason or the other, different set of supporters come to his rescue taking away all his fault, majority of them are mainly his natives Nigerians.
On the other hand another set of fans clearly believe that he is not good enough.
Therefore, this article is solely published to know the opinions of majority of Chelsea fans about the Nigerian midfielder, how high/low they rate John Obi Mikel.
Mikel even himself claimed recently that anyone can beat Chelsea in the circumstances they are in nowadays.
Is he one of the reasons behind Chelsea’s problems? Is he a top quality defensive mid player or just an okay one?

MIKEL is definitly not the problem… He is a very good player… Scoring goals is not his work… MIKEL knows his work & he is really doing it perfectly!!! Even Mourinho himself knows that!!!
Mikel is good and fantastic.
I am Nigerian and if Chelsea doesn’t appreciate his work I’m sure teams like Pool will gladly take him. I am so happy Moses is out of that team.
Mikel. is not to blame, after chelsea would have been better if Mikel ‘s position was not changed yet he always do his job, check matches playd without him data when u will rate him higher .
Mikel is a good player and his not chelsea’s problem. The problem with chelsea is that attacking midfielders don’t usually play with the strikers.
I am Nigerian, and this is the Truth, i became a chelsea fan in 1996, when another fellow Nigerian began playing for Chelsea, Most of you will not know Celestine Babayero, A chelsea Great, most of his professional career, was with Chelsea, he too was never ever regarded. Mikel Obi will win African footballer of the year award this year, and it is insulting that the club Mikel has given his all, even sacrificed his playing style for , do not respect him, let me tell you why, we all know, is Essien better than Mikel no, Mikel has benched all and has played through all the Coaches stanford bridge has ever brought in, if he is not good, these world class coaches will not play him, Michael Ballack again yesterday again has commended the silent service Mikel has provided to Chelsea, You guys only look forward to the goal scorers probably thats why we are not good supporters, Mikel tackles wins the balls retrive the, and spreds out, ask me which chelsea player has the same pass rate as Mikel, and defence rate as mikel in the Midfield, Mikel can go forward and abandon the defence too, he is even better player that way. This is Mikels 8th season, He should be respected. Only 3 players have more experience and international caps more than Mikel in the chelsea squad. He will be a chelsea great, not why, since he is a black guy, you wanted Van ginkel, how can you compare, you wanted Jose, how can you compare, you wanted Romeo, how can you compare. I am worried as a chelsea fan, i have never seen any fan wear a Mikel Shirt or Jersey, Untill we lose him just the way we just lost Lukaku, then thats whn we would all realize this injustice. Mikel has played and won everything with chelsea and not by sitting on the bench
Mikel should be respected.
It depends on which Essien u are talking about, the young Essien at the days of Bison is way too good than Mikel to be honest, but Mikel is better than the current Essien because of injuries and aged. I wonder what he(Essien) is still doing at chelsea. the writer is observant person because i have also seen that. Anytime any article is been publish about Mikel’s performance, it seems to be only the Nigerians who rate him high.
But there are a lot of questions which needs to be asked? .. Whenever Mikel plays for Chelsea he had a lot of possession than anyone but how many of his possessed ball end up in a goal? … how many long balls does he give upfront? … how many shot on target does he get? – Seriously a lot of CDM’s help in attack and on a good day create chance or score, that is something Mikel never do in Chelsea – that is why a lot of the fans are always picking up on him.
To me Mikel is a great player, I don’t see any faulth in him. Even the great makalele didn’t score much goals in his career. Mikel is doing a fantastic job in his role. He should be respected…
The moment chelsea realise the impact of mikel in the team the better for them, why are all chelsea midfielders always neglecting the strikers and looking for goals themselves, believe me if mikel should score goals for chelsea it will not kill him, he is just disciplined and giving chelsea his all
Mikel, is a great player in the eagles not in the blues. 8 yrs in a club and never made premier ship team of the year. to be candid, mikel is not a defensive midFielder because (FACT) he is not aggressive in his tackles and very sluggish. his role in the eagles does not demand this. poor accuracy on goal, good pass accuracy and ball sense. but very low aggressiveness. dat would keep strikers away to some extent. dats the main problem wit Chelsea now ( no aggressive marking). look at BARCA, they hold the ball well, but when they loose the ball, they cover you like bees AND MARK YOU AGGRESSIVELY
I wonder whether you guys are chelsea fans or mikel’s fans. we know mikil plays well for nigeria but this is about chelsea football. let’s compare midfielders like Alonso, Alex song, Carrick, Arteta, Yaya toure, Gustavo, Gundogan and even Ramires who was shifted from attacking midfield to defencive midfield but he is still doing well. Obi has played this position for several years now and he should be able to adapt as a versatile player. fans critisize players when they make mistakes, implying that, the more your mistakes, the more the critisisms. I think mikel’s problem is lack of confidence and not that he doesn’t know how to play. he fears loosing the ball and thus giving short and back passes which sometimes lands in the hands of the opponent resulting in goals as seen during our champions league opening match against juventus last season. Ramires had been a subject of critisism when he came to chelsea but it took him just a season to adjust and same is D. Luiz. Mikel is still young and I think he can improve.
Mikel is a good player no dobt for that an he did a very good job for chelsea he always play well anytime he have chance to play so i dont see why they we critizice him
