Rodgers Expects More – Liverpool to Get Rid of this One Player

Rodgers Expects More - Liverpool to Get Rid of this One PlayerThe season only just ended and Liverpool have wasted no time in confirming their first transfer, agreeing a deal with Toure. Adding to that, they are reportedly close to sealing another deal with Celta Vigo’s forward Iago Aspas as Rodgers looks to upgrade his plans for next season.
The Reds have been closely linked with numerous top talents in the world playing in various positions. However, one position that has been discussed a lot over the past few weeks is that of a winger and this perhaps indicates that Liverpool are to get rid of one player.
The player in discussion is in fact Stewart Downing. The former Middlesbrough player had a horrendous first season at Anfield under the management of Kenny Dalglish where he failed to score or assist a single goal in the premier league.
Although, the winger improved largely, won over some fans and had a decent last season but in all honesty, that can only be considered good as far as his own standards are concerned. Liverpool need much, much more than that.
The ex-Villa winger scored 3 goals and provided 5 assists in the premier league for the reds last season. To be more precise, in 65 league appearances Downing managed that mentioned stat.
In came Phil Coutinho, the Brazilian who only signed for the reds last winter has soon grown to become one of the most important players in the side. The former Porto and Inter playmaker has mesmerized Liverpool supporters and troubled opposition defenses week in week out.
Not many foreign players can settle into the world’s toughest league that rapidly but Phil has been brilliant from the word go. His stats are remarkable to say the least, one that shows the difference in class as compared to Downing and convinces Rodgers that he needs someone like Coutinho at the other wing as well.
In just 13 appearances for the reds, Coutinho has outperformed Downing. He has been directly involved in 10 goals, scoring 3 and providing 7 assists.
Liverpool have been reportedly linked with a host of wingers such as the likes of Tello, Ince, Atsu as Rodgers looks to add more firepower into the attacking setup. Take nothing away from the effort put in by Downing last season but Liverpool do need someone better next season.
